Free NFLPA Exam Question of the Day #3: When Can a New Agent Begin Negotiating After a Player Changes Representation?
Welcome to Question of the Day #3 in Athlete Rep Lab's daily NFLPA practice series.
Every day until the NFLPA Contract Advisor Certification Exam, we'll publish a brand-new, original exam-style question covering an important concept from the NFLPA Regulations Governing Contract Advisors and the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Today's topic: Changing Representation and SRA Termination Waiting Periods.
One of the most common mistakes candidates make is assuming that a player's new Standard Representation Agreement (SRA) immediately gives the new agent the ability to negotiate.
But under NFLPA Regulations, the timing of the original SRA termination matters.
Let's see if you can avoid today's exam trap.
Today's Question
On January 15, a top college prospect signs an NFLPA Standard Representation Agreement (SRA) with Agent A. The NFL Draft takes place from April 23 to April 25. On April 10, the player decides he wants to switch representation. He sends a written termination notice to Agent A and the NFLPA.
On April 15, the player signs a new SRA with Agent B. Under the NFLPA Regulations Governing Contract Advisors, when does Agent B officially acquire the right to negotiate the player's rookie contract with an NFL club?
A) April 15, because the 5-day termination rule applies from the April 10 notice date.
B) May 10, because a 30-day waiting period applies to terminations initiated by a rookie prior to the NFL Draft.
C) April 25, because all pre-draft termination windows automatically expire on the final day of the NFL Draft.
D) April 23, the first day of the NFL Draft.

Correct Answer
✅ A) April 15, because if a Standard Representation Agreement is being signed by a prospective rookie player prior to the date which is thirty (30) days before the NFL Draft (which January 15 is), the Agreement shall not be terminable until at least thirty (30) days after it has been signed. Since 30 days after it was signed is February 14, the player actuallly could have terminated his original agent as soon as Febraury 14. But since he terminated his original agent on April 10 the 5-day waiting period applies.
Exam Tip
When you see a question involving:
A player changing agents
A new SRA
A termination notice
The NFL Draft timeline
Pre-draft representation
do not immediately assume the new agent can act.
The exam is testing whether you understand that:
The timing of the original SRA termination controls when the new Contract Advisor gains negotiation rights.
